Member’s Tour of the Easton Foundation

We invite the Tel Aviv Museum of Art's American Friends' Board of Directors to an exclusive private tour of The Easton Foundation.

The Easton Foundation was established by Louise Bourgeois in the 1980s as a non-profit and charitable organization. Upon her death in 2010, at the age of 98, Bourgeois bequeathed her home and an adjacent townhouse to become the Foundation’s center, and donated a substantial collection of her art to its holdings.

The Easton Foundation is now dedicated to preserving Bourgeois’s legacy. Serving to promote the scholarship and awareness of Bourgeois’s life and art, the Foundation aims to cultivate new interpretations of her work while providing a deeper understanding of her artistic process and creative milieu. As part of this mission, the Foundation has established the Louise Bourgeois Archive, a study center and residency for curators and scholars, as well as a sculpture garden and a small exhibition space presenting works from the collection. The Foundation is also undertaking the ongoing conservation of Bourgeois’s distinctive home and studio, in which she lived and worked for almost 50 years.

Curators Over Coffee: Webinar on Cascade Exhibition with Curator Shahar Molcho

TAMAF members came together for coffee over ZOOM to learn about TAMA’s latest exhibition and explore the transformative power of light in Muhammad Abo Salme's first museum exhibition with Tel Aviv Museum of Art’s Curator of Contemporary Art Shahar Molcho.

Cascade, installed in the Museum's unique Lightfall space, marks Muhammad Abo Salme's first museum exhibition. Known for his lighting artistry, Abo Salme transforms natural daylight and artificial lighting to create a spectacle that diverges from the actual time of day.

The installation features thousands of meters of metal bead chains reminiscent of military dog tags, symbolizing solidarity with hostages. This dense mass, suspended in mid-air, evokes both distress and wonderment, reflecting the universal human loss from war. Cascade explores this altered perception of time, suggesting a shimmering, light-flooded space that can also feel like a psychological abyss.

Pace Gallery Private Tour with Michal Rovner

The Tel Aviv Museum of Art's American Friends (TAMAF) invited attendees to join artist Michal Rovner for a privately led tour of her exhibition, Pragim, at Pace Gallery in New York. The exhibition, titled Pragim—Hebrew for Poppies—showcased prints, video works, and installations from a series Rovner initiated in 2019. Over the past five years, Rovner documented wild poppies growing in her Israeli field as part of this ongoing project.

With a career spanning over 30 years, Rovner has explored universal themes concerning the human condition, including identity, place, and dislocation. The poppy, with its diverse cultural connotations, embodies notions of fragility, resilience, remembrance, and loss. The ongoing regional conflicts have lent a new layer of significance to Rovner's Pragim works, reflecting the unrest and anguish in the region. Utilizing a somber color palette of black, gray, and red, Rovner infuses her human-scale poppies with a sense of harshness and tragedy.

We had the privilege of Marc Glimcher, CEO of Pace Gallery, introducing Michal to our group followed by a tour led by the artist. TAMAF guests were invited after this tour to a private room for a celebratory toast to the artist. Thank you to Pace Gallery, Marc Glimcher, Valentina Volchkova, Dani Forest, and our TAMAF Family.

Private Tour of the Codex Sassoon

The Tel Aviv Museum of Art's American Friends (TAMAF) invited Friends to a private tour of the Codex Sassoon at Sotheby's, New York, led by Sharon Liberman Mintz, Senior Judaica Specialist.

The Bible is one of the world’s greatest treasures and holds powerful resonance for the three monotheistic religions and their billions of adherents. For thousands of years, its sacred words have been closely studied, analyzed, and meditated on. Copied, printed, and translated into scores of languages the world over, the Hebrew Bible arguably constitutes the most influential book of human history and the bedrock of Western civilization. Codex Sassoon, created circa 900, is the earliest surviving example of a single codex containing all the books of the Hebrew Bible with their punctuation, vowels, and accents.

The codex is named for its prominent modern owner, David Solomon Sassoon (1880-1942), who assembled the largest and most important private collection of Hebrew manuscripts in the world and had a special affinity for Bibles in particular. Some of the most valuable and important items in his library belonged to this genre of Hebrew literature. His collection catalogue, Ohel Dawid, begins and ends with biblical material, and Codex Sassoon is its very last entry, giving pride of place to this monument of world civilization.

Photography Under Fire

Photography Under Fire was an art installation that was showcased simultaneously in the bustling cities of Tel Aviv and New York. The installation was displayed on the facade of the Tel Aviv Museum building and on giant screens in Times Square in collaboration with the Charney Resolution Center and ZAZ10TS cultural initiative.

Marking one year after war broke out in Ukraine, the installation featured dozens of photographs by Israeli photographer Ziv Koren, which revealed shocking and harrowing scenes from the horrors of the war. The images capture the human toll of conflict and expose the devastating impact on individuals and communities caught in the crossfire.

The installation aims to raise awareness about the impact of war and the importance of peacebuilding efforts. By showcasing the photographs in two major cities, the exhibition hopes to spark conversations and dialogue about the ongoing conflicts and the need for peaceful solutions.

Through this collaboration between the Charney Resolution Center, ZAZ10TS cultural initiative, and the Tel Aviv Museum, the art installation creates a platform for dialogue and reflection, encouraging viewers to contemplate the impact of war and the role of art in promoting peace.
